Governor Scott's Selection for State Board of Education is Bad for Public Education

Mar 6, 2025

Gov. Scott Appoints Former Lawmaker Brian Campion to State Board of Education

Brian Campion’s appointment to the State Board of Education comes at a critical moment for Vermont’s public schools. With rising education costs, steep property tax increases, and major policy changes on the table, the future of our entire public education system is at stake. Vermont can no longer afford to prop up private schools that operate with little oversight and accountability while our public schools continue to struggle.

At a time when public education is in crisis, the Governor had the opportunity to appoint someone with direct experience in Vermont’s public schools—an educator, administrator, or school board member. Instead, he chose a longtime advocate for elite private schools. Campion’s record in the Vermont Senate of advancing policies that favored private institutions concerns us greatly, and we can only hope that he recognizes the urgency of this moment and finally chooses to start prioritizing Vermont’s public education system over protecting the interests of private schools.
